Mesteno, the orignal Kiger herd stallion
The fabled and mythical Wild Mustang horse is a classic symbol of the American West – hardy, rough and rugged from a unique melding of worlds old and new. But it was a Kiger Mustang who has inspired Steven Speilberg’s blockbuster movie "Spirit," that captured the hearts of children and adults alike.
While once thought extinct after hundreds of years of cross breeding with domestic horses, Spanish Mustangs were discovered in the wild in the early 1970’s. These horses were isolated and kept in separate herd areas to breed. One herd was delegated to the Kiger-Riddle mountain area of southeastern Oregon. These are the Kiger Mustangs.
To see a wild Kiger Mustang is to get a rare glimpse into the ancient past. You can feel the earth move and the warm breath of the noble Iberian warhorse of the Greeks and Romans. You can sense the desert heat of the Berber Arabian horse. You can hear the whipsers of the Spanish Conquistador’s as they ride through the New World on their stunning Spanish Barbs and Andalusians. The ancient sound of hoofbeats drumming is the Kiger. This horse bears not only the DNA of its ancestors, but the combined beauty, grace, intelligence and athleticism.
Come meet this incredible horse. See why so many who meet a Kiger love their wild hearts and beauty.
