Sage Lake Farm

Kiger Sport Horses from the Wild

Sake Lake Farm Kigers

We have owned and worked with 7 wild kigers since 2004.  In 2009, we currently have 5 Kiger mustangs, a draft horse and a Thoroughbred.  Technically, all of our horses are "rescues."  The Kigers were adopted from the wild.  Our draft mare was a PMU rescue.  Our Thoroughbred gelding is a racehorse rescue.

What’s in a name? We wanted to give our Kigers names that honored both their Iberian background as Spanish horses and their American background as Mustangs. We use our farm name at the beginning of each animal name, then we honor the native American tradition of naming the moons. We try to pick a moon name from the month of the horse’s birth that comes closest to their appearance or personality, and if that doesn’t fit , we use an Iberian ( Spanish or Portuguese) name or word.

SLF Frost Moon

2004 dun mare from the Kiger-Riddle herd in OR, out of wild mare Kiger Wolf Moon by wild herd stallion Kiger Hunter Moon

Frosty in May, 2009
Frosty is a 5 year-old, 14.2 hh classic Kiger dun mare.  She sports all the dun markings - leg and wither stripes, webbing, dorsal stripe, along with a crested neck and compact athletic body. Frosty was adopted from the wild as a foal along side her mother, Wolf.  You may notice that she is missing the tips of her ears.  She was born in the OR desert in February and lost the tips to frostbite.
Frosty  is currently working at the Novice/Training level eventing.  She is very much an alpha mare and her temperament falls on the "hot" end of the sprectrum.  Visit our eventing blog to see more about Frosty.

SLF Marcos Moon
2006 dun gelding from a private wild herd in OR, sired by "Doc" (gentled stallion from the wild) out of an unknown wild mare

Marcos, Spring 2009
Marcos sired Maya as a young colt and is now gelded and started his training.  At 3, he stands 14hh and growing, and is ready to start under saddle.  Marc is the "Tigger" of the horse world.  He is always happy, bouncy and fun.  He's a lovely mover and free jumps 5 feet with style and ease.

SLF Kiger Wolf Moon

2002 dun mare from the Kiger-Riddle herd in OR

Summer 2009 - Wolf & foal
"Wolfie" is a pretty wild mare from the wild.  She is the dam of our mare Frost and filly Maya.  Wolfie is a fairly typical foundation Kiger mare from the wild.  She stands 14.1hh and has tri-colored mane and tail.  She sports zebra stripes on all four legs and at the withers and a white blaze on her face.  She is built sturdy and has strong hooves.  Wolf has a much more laid back personality than her daughter Frosty.

SLF Kiger Bella Eclipse Moon
2007 brown filly from the Kiger-Riddle Herd, OR

Bella, Spring 2009
Bella is a young filly adopted from the wild.  Her color is getting lighter and we expect her to be a bay dun at maturity.  At 2 years, Bella is under 14 hands so she isn't expected to grow beyond 14.2hh.  Bella is somewhat of a loner and had a tough time being accepted by the herd at first.  Now that she has her rank, she is still fine wandering off on her own or staying out when the others come in.  She definitely has a mind of her own and lots of chutzpah.

SLF Kiger Maya Moon- 2009 dun filly
June 2009 dun filly, SLF Kiger Marcos Moon X SLF Kiger Wolf Moon

Maya, day 1, 2009
This beautiful little dun filly has looks. moves, and personality to spare.  She is very much like her sister Frost in looks and personality. Born in domestication, Maya will likely mature to about 15+ hands.

SLF Fe Fi Fo Fum - black 2003 Percheron mare

Fi, Spring 2009
Fi came to us through a rescue literally within the hour of being taken to a slaughter house.  She is a beautiful 17hh, 6yo Percheron mare and Queen of the Herd.

SLF Gentleman Johnny
- gray 1991Thoroughbred gelding

Johnny, Winter 2009
Johnny is a sweetheart and Jack of all Trades.  He spent 12 years (yes, 12 years) as a racehorse and came to us through a racehorse rescue at age 13.  He is currently retired from any strenuous work but ponies, babysits and teaches.  He is patient, gentle and kind to all.
